Tell us about your sport and fitness background.

I have always been naturally athletic and was a 3-sport athlete in high school. But ever since I was a teenager I was very inconsistent with exercise. I was overweight and out of shape for most of my life. I started working out at a gym regularly in 2018 but had a complete knee replacement a year later. Recovery took several months and was very discouraging. At the time I doubted that I would ever be able to exercise regularly or enjoy sports again.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD.. What was it? How did it feel?

My daughter Alisa joined Crossfit Saved a few months before I did. Prior to my first visit, I didn’t know what Crossfit was. I think my first WOD was burpees and rope-climbing. I made it to the top but that first climb was not pretty! Most lifts and movements were new to me in my first visits, and always challenging. But I always felt safe in the way the coaches adapted movements based on my skill level and mobility limitations.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting at CFS (before/after)?

Since Crossfitting, I have lost about half of my body fat, and gained muscle mass in a balanced way. My posture, which was always a bit slumped, has completely changed. My endurance and stamina, even performing regular daily tasks, is better than ever.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I look back at the goals I set when I started Crossfit and I think I just expected to lose some weight and try to get close to the shape I was in a few years ago.  I never imagined that I would end up in the best physical condition of my adult life, but that is what has happened.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit/CFS moments.

I love that everyone celebrates each other’s accomplishments. First muscle-ups are celebrated like a Super Bowl victory. I haven’t gotten mine yet, but when I do it will be my favorite CFS moment!

Any advice for people just getting started?

Do not let any excuse keep you from doing this. There is always a way to benefit from these exercises and movements regardless of your current skill level. I started Crossfit when I was 55 years old. I was overweight, I had an artificial knee and I couldn’t climb stairs without breathing heavily. And don’t let periodic setbacks keep you from continuing. I have been on long vacations, gained weight periodically and have been through times when I am just not motivated to show up. But I have never regretted coming and have never felt out of place here even when I struggle with some movements.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of Crossfit?

I am a hunter, I play piano and enjoy vacationing with my wife. We will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary in August!
